DS Smith Packaging Rawcliffe: JCB bag-in-box oil pack
Bag-in-box packaging has traditionally been the realm of wine, but DSSP Rawcliffe cleverly harnessed the technology to dramatically improve the supply-chain issues facing transporting oil in plastic drums. Moving the product into these packs has not only improved vehicle utilisation by 20%, but also the outer pack is 98% recyclable and can be disposed of through normal recycling waste streams. As one judge pointed out: "a great application of technology to meet the needs of today's market".

DS Smith Packaging Rawcliffe: JCB bag-in-box oil pack
The bag-in-box oil pack for JCB caught the eye of the judges as a great alternative to the plastic oil drum. The outer pack is 98% recyclable, can be disposed of through normal recycling routes and the weight of the non-recyclable plastic container is 84% less than an equivalent-sized drum, meaning less lorries are needed to transport empty drums. "It's easy to use with an impressive reduction in material use and logistics," said one judge.

DS Smith Packaging Louth: Bernard Matthews Farms Deli Range RRP
A very close second, DS Smith Louth's Deli Range RRP for Bernard Matthews Farms was hailed by one of our judges as a "great example of sound, strategic thinking". The relaunch features single- and double-facing, hand-erect and machine-erect packs.
DS Smith Louth has moved from litho-laminate to flexo printing, reducing the environmental impact of the packs, and the single-flute corrugated fibreboard is made with 75% recycled material and is fully recyclable. The firm also removed perforations from the front display area to provide a cleaner appearance.
